Core documents (almost every market)
- Bill of Lading (B/L) — proof of shipment and ownership in transit. You need the original to release the car.
- Commercial Invoice — states the sale price; customs uses it to assess duty.
- Export Certificate (CCC) — China's export document showing the car left legally.
- 120-Point Inspection Report — condition proof; also reassures your clearing agent and buyer.
- Packing List — for container shipments, lists contents.
Market-specific certificates
| Market | Extra document |
|---|---|
| Nigeria | SONCAP / PC certificate, Form M |
| Kenya / Tanzania | Pre-shipment inspection (JVTA/EAA) |
| GCC / UAE | Arabic-translated specs (recommended) |
| EAEU (Russia/KZ/KG) | Eurasian declaration (CMR/rail waybill) |
| South Asia | Type approval / homologation for EVs |
Why documents matter
Customs will hold a car without the right papers, and storage fees add up fast. Getting the certificate set right at the China end prevents weeks of delay at your port. Your exporter should hand you a complete pack on arrival.
Pro tips
- Keep digital copies of everything; email them to your clearing agent before the ship arrives.
- Confirm HS codes if you are importing parts alongside the car.
- Double-check the VIN on every document matches the car.
